UN Security Council Extends Afghanistan Mission, Urges Taliban to Reverse Women Crackdown

The United Nations Security Council convened to discuss the future of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). The council unanimously adopted a resolution extending UNAMA’s political mandate until June 17 2027 and authorizing it to support humanitarian aid deliveries and promote inclusive governance without discrimination based on gender, religion, or ethnicity.

The resolution calls on the Taliban authorities to immediately reverse restrictions imposed on women and girls, citing concerns over education bans, employment limits, and broader human‑rights abuses. It also urges the Taliban to cooperate on counter‑terrorism commitments and to facilitate talks with regional countries and the international community. The mission’s mandate includes facilitating economic development, commercial activity, and the repatriation of Central Bank assets for the benefit of the Afghan people.
