UN Security Council extends Darfur arms embargo
The United Nations Security Council has unanimously adopted Resolution 2830, extending the arms embargo on Sudan’s Darfur region for two months until December 11. This extension is described as a “technical rollover” intended to allow more time for diplomatic negotiations.
The council also extended the mandate of the panel of experts monitoring these sanctions until January 11, 2027. While the extension passed, the council failed to reach a consensus on a United States proposal to expand the arms embargo to cover the entire territory of Sudan. The US had advocated for a broader scope to address the current realities of the war, including the use of drones and dual-use technology.
Opposition to the expansion came from several members, including Russia and China, as well as the African group consisting of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Liberia, and Somalia. These nations preferred maintaining the existing regime focused on Darfur. The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which began in April 2023, has resulted in significant casualties and humanitarian concerns.
