UN Security Council extends Sudan arms embargo for one month
The UN Security Council has unanimously voted to extend the existing arms embargo on Sudan’s Darfur region for one month. The decision also extends the mandate of the UN panel of experts monitoring the sanctions until November 9.
The brief extension follows failed negotiations regarding a United States proposal to expand the arms embargo to include all of Sudan. The U.S. aims to use a nationwide ban to pressure the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces to end the ongoing conflict. However, the proposal faced significant opposition.
Russia has signaled its intent to veto any expansion of the restrictions, with Deputy UN Ambassador Anna Evstigneeva stating that Moscow will not allow even a hint of broadening the embargo. Sudan’s representative at the UN, Al-Harith Idris, also opposed the expansion, arguing that a nationwide ban would weaken the national military and facilitate illegal arms trade while empowering non-state armed groups.
The conflict, which intensified in April 2023, has resulted in a massive humanitarian crisis, displacing an estimated 13 million people and contributing to widespread famine.
