UN Security Council extends Sudan sanctions and Darfur arms embargo

The United Nations Security Council has unanimously approved resolution 2828 (2026), granting a one-month technical extension to targeted sanctions and the arms embargo in the Darfur region of Sudan. These measures will remain in effect until October 9, 2026, while the mandate for the Panel of Experts assisting the 1591 Sanctions Committee has been extended until November 9, 2026.

Despite the unanimous vote, significant diplomatic divisions persist. The United States is advocating for a systemic reform of the current sanctions architecture, which has been in place since 2005. Washington is calling for the arms embargo to be expanded to cover the entire territory of Sudan rather than being limited to Darfur. US officials have emphasized the need to include measures addressing sexual violence, kidnappings for ransom, and attacks on humanitarian workers.

The push for reform comes amid an escalating conflict between the Sudanese national army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) that began in April 2023. US diplomats highlighted the humanitarian toll, citing incidents such as the destruction of food aid in South Kordofan, and urged all parties to respect an unconditional humanitarian truce and cease external support fueling the hostilities.
