UN Security Council meets over Red Sea maritime security

The United Nations Security Council is convening to discuss the escalating situation in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait following an offensive by Houthi rebels in the Red Sea. Requested by France, the meeting aims to address the rebels' increasing control over this strategic maritime passage, which connects Europe to Asia.

Qatar has issued a warning regarding the regional instability, stating that the loss of access to Bab el-Mandeb would be ‘catastrophic for the world.’ This concern is heightened by the existing blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which has already disrupted global energy flows. Houthi forces have recently seized control of several islands, including Greater and Lesser Hanish, as well as the port of Mokha and Perim Island.

The conflict has significant economic implications, contributing to volatility in oil markets. With the Strait of Hormuz already restricted, the potential closure of the Red Sea route threatens to exacerbate global supply chain disruptions and energy shortages.
