UN Security Council reviews Syria’s political transition and recovery

The UN Security Council held a regular session to discuss the political and humanitarian situation in Syria, noting an accelerating pace of national recovery following the overthrow of the Bashar al-Assad regime in December 2024. UN Deputy Special Envoy Claudio Cordone highlighted recent developments, including the dissolution of the Syrian Democratic Forces and the conviction of former officials, including Assad.

Delegations addressed several challenges to stability. Multiple members condemned Israeli military incursions into Syrian territory, stating they violate Syrian sovereignty and the 1974 disengagement agreement. Russia noted that these strikes hinder stabilization efforts, while other members emphasized the need for inclusive state institutions to ensure all Syrians can participate in shaping the country’s future.

On the humanitarian and economic front, officials reported improvements in the agriculture and energy sectors and noted that citizens are returning to their homes. There were calls for a shift in international focus from humanitarian aid toward long-term investment in reconstruction. The United States also noted that the removal of Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism is intended to facilitate trade and investment opportunities.
