UN warns climate crisis threatens water access for millions worldwide

The United Nations warned that climate change is endangering reliable supplies of drinking water for millions of people. Intensifying droughts, floods, rising demand and pollution are straining water resources, heightening risks of food insecurity, health problems and population displacement. Experts call for stronger ecosystem protection, efficient water use, investment in resilient infrastructure and greater international cooperation to secure sustainable supplies.

A separate study in Peru’s Ayacucho region created a computational model to simulate water‑supply scenarios for the Ccahuanamarca community. The model showed that during dry months such as June and July river flow can fall to zero, underscoring the need for improved storage and distribution systems. While water quality met safety standards, distribution efficiency remains a critical issue, and the tool is intended to guide policy and management improvements.
