Children's climate risk, water scarcity and conflict
Overview
Mid‑June 2026 UNICEF reported that roughly half of the world’s children – about 1.1 billion – are exposed to three or more overlapping climate hazards, with drought, extreme heat and heatwaves forming the most common risk cluster. Hotspots include the Sahel, South‑Asia and small island states; Sub‑Saharan Africa and South Asia together account for about 70 % of children facing multiple threats. A follow‑up brief on 28 June added national detail, noting the largest three‑hazard exposures in Nigeria (74 million children), Pakistan (34 million) and India (32 million). The same day a UNICEF Climate Risk Report highlighted that 16 million children in Brazil are exposed to three or more hazards such as extreme heat, drought and floods. Parallel UN analysis confirmed that 258 million children and adolescents have their education interrupted by conflict, displacement or climate shocks, an increase of 21 million over the previous 18 months. On 8 July the United Nations warned that climate‑driven water scarcity is endangering reliable drinking‑water supplies for millions worldwide, with intensifying droughts, floods and pollution heightening food‑security, health problems and displacement. A study in Peru’s Ayacucho region showed river flow can fall to zero during the dry season, underscoring the need for improved storage and distribution systems to protect vulnerable communities, including children. UNICEF’s analysis released on 16 July reiterated that up to 23.4 million children could fall into monetary poverty by the end of 2026 as a result of the war in the Middle East, outlining moderate and severe shock scenarios that would affect mostly Asia and Africa. Fuel‑price spikes are already straining families in Somalia, Ethiopia, Nigeria and Bangladesh. A UN‑sponsored scientific review published on 18 July found that climate change is expanding the risk of water‑borne diseases, with hotter temperatures and extreme weather promoting pathogen spread in drinking water.
