UN warns Ebola response hampered by violence in DR Congo's North Kivu

United Nations spokesperson Stephen Dujarric said that insecurity in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s North Kivu province, especially the Beni area, is disrupting humanitarian operations, including the fight against Ebola. According to local civil‑society groups, attacks between 13‑19 July killed at least 30 people and injured more than a dozen, displacing civilians and forcing aid agencies to halt movement in several sites.

Dujarric noted that six humanitarian organizations have suspended activities in the Beni locality due to safety concerns. By 20 July, Congo’s national health authorities reported 2,473 confirmed Ebola cases across Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut‑Uélé and Tshuapa provinces. The UN reiterated the need to protect health‑ and aid‑workers and to guarantee uninterrupted, safe access for humanitarian assistance.
