UN warns of ethnic cleansing concerns in West Bank refugee camps
A new report from the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) warns that Israel’s military actions in the West Bank may constitute crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing. The report focuses on 'Operation Iron Wall,' a military offensive launched in January 2025 that resulted in the forced displacement of over 33,000 Palestinians from the Jenin, Nur Shams, and Tulkarem refugee camps.
According to the UN, Israeli forces used airstrikes, armored bulldozers, and controlled detonations to render the camps uninhabitable. The report notes that by October 2025, significant portions of the camps were destroyed or damaged: 52% in Jenin, 48% in Nur Shams, and 36% in Tulkarem. The OHCHR stated that the systematic and long-term nature of the displacement raises serious concerns regarding the crime of forcible transfer.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk suggested the operation's conduct indicates an aim to expel as many Palestinians as possible to facilitate illegal Israeli settlements. The report also documented the deaths of 102 Palestinians, including 21 children, during the period. Israel has rejected these accusations, with its mission in Geneva accusing the UN rights office of abandoning neutrality to engage in activism and spreading misinformation.
