West Bank displacement and ethnic cleansing allegations

Overview

Allegations of ethnic cleansing and forced displacement of Palestinians in the West Bank have intensified through domestic and international channels.

More than 200 former Israeli military, security, and political figures have accused the government of Benjamin Netanyahu of complicity in the ‘ethnic cleansing’ of Palestinians. These officials expressed concerns regarding settler violence and the displacement of communities, with former Army Chief of Staff Eyal Ben-Reuven characterizing settler violence as a greater threat to Israel than Iran, Gaza, or Lebanon. Concurrently, 235 former Dutch officials have called for an arms embargo and the suspension of the EU-Israel trade agreement.

A United Nations Human Rights report has warned that Israel’s military actions, specifically ‘Operation Iron Wall’ launched in January 2025, may constitute crimes against humanity, including the crime of forcible transfer. The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) noted that the operation targeted refugee camps in Jenin, Nur Shams, and Tulkarem through airstrikes, armored bulldozers, and controlled detonations to render them uninhabitable. By cutting off water, electricity, and humanitarian aid, these actions have left significant portions of the camps damaged or destroyed: 52% in Jenin, 48% in Nur Shams, and 36% in Tulkarem.

The OHCHR documented the deaths of 102 Palestinians, including 21 children, during this period. As of July 2026, the UN reports that over 33,000 displaced individuals have been prevented from returning to their homes. High Commissioner Volker Turk suggested the operation’s aim may have been to expel Palestinians to facilitate illegal Israeli settlements, characterizing the actions as potentially amounting to collective punishment and ethnic cleansing. Israel has strongly rejected these allegations, with its mission in Geneva accusing the UN rights office of abandoning its neutrality to engage in activism and spreading misinformation.
