Gaza remains recovery raises war crimes concerns, UN warns
United Nations Human Rights Chief Volker Türk has warned that the recovery of human remains from the rubble in Gaza raises serious concerns regarding possible war crimes and violations of international law. The discovery of remains, which appear to belong to entire families including many women and children, has prompted calls for international investigators to be granted access to all parts of the Gaza Strip to gather and preserve forensic evidence.
According to the Palestinian Civil Defence, more than 630 bodies and human remains have been recovered from destroyed buildings since November 2025. However, officials estimate that over 8,000 people remain missing under the debris. The UN warned that the current findings may only represent the ‘tip of the iceberg’ due to the massive scale of destruction.
Recovery efforts are being severely hampered by restrictions on heavy machinery. Palestinian authorities report that Israel is refusing entry to the equipment necessary for large-scale rubble removal, forcing many teams to search through debris by hand. The UN estimates that the military campaign has generated approximately 61 million tons of debris, a volume that could take years to clear.
