UN warns of rising executions in Iran to suppress dissent

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has expressed alarm regarding a sharp increase in executions and death sentences in Iran. Türk stated that capital punishment is being utilized to "instill fear among the population and suppress dissent."

Since March 19, at least 56 people have been executed on national security-related charges, including 27 cases linked to earlier protests. More than 100 individuals face potential execution under similar charges. Concerns have been raised regarding the lack of fair trial guarantees, including alleged torture to obtain confessions, closed-door proceedings, and rapid executions following arrests.

Amnesty International also characterized the situation as a "horrible wave" of executions intended to project strength and control following popular revolts. The crackdown follows periods of widespread anti-government protests driven by economic hardship and inflation, as well as military actions involving the United States and Israel against Iran.
