UN warns of unprecedented El Niño intensity through early 2027

The United Nations and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) have issued urgent warnings regarding an El Niño event that could reach unprecedented levels of intensity. Projections indicate that sea surface temperatures in the central Pacific could rise to 3.8°C above average between November 2026 and January 2027, a threshold that exceeds the monitoring scales used for the past four decades.

This phenomenon is expected to impact multiple regions, including Latin America, East and Southern Africa, Asia, and the Pacific. Potential consequences include extreme heat, severe droughts, and torrential flooding. The UN has warned that these climate shifts could trigger economic shocks, food insecurity for millions, population displacement, and increased migration.

In response, the UN is mobilizing over $50 million through the Central Emergency Response Fund to assist 11 highly vulnerable nations, including Chad, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Somalia, and South Sudan. In Peru, specifically in the Piura region, UNICEF has reported that over 370,000 children and adolescents face high risks from flooding and service disruptions.
