UN warns over 5,000 child deaths in Sudan conflict

UN Deputy Secretary‑General for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo and UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Hanan Souleiman told the Security Council that more than 5,000 children have been killed or maimed since the fighting began in Sudan, and that the true toll is likely much higher. They called on all parties to intensify pressure for an immediate cease‑fire and to ensure safe, unimpeded humanitarian access, stressing that aid must reach children wherever they are.

The UN World Food Programme is currently providing food and cash assistance to over 100,000 vulnerable people in El Obeid, a critical hub in North Kordofan, and is preparing to expand support to up to 250,000 if the situation worsens. The programme said it urgently needs US$646 million to sustain operations for the next six months.

Greece, speaking at the meeting, expressed deep concern over the rapid deterioration of security around El Obeid, warned of the risk of broader instability, condemned attacks on civilians and non‑military infrastructure, and urged an inclusive political process led by Sudanese authorities.
