UNAM commemorates 475 years of university tradition in Mexico

The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) is commemorating 475 years of university tradition in Mexico. The anniversary traces back to the Royal Decree issued on September 21, 1551, which established the Royal University of Mexico, the predecessor to the modern institution.

During an extraordinary session of the University Council, Rector Leonardo Lomelí Vanegas emphasized that academic autonomy, public higher education, and collegiate government remain essential pillars for expanding knowledge and serving society. He called on the university community to protect these hard-won freedoms and to ensure opportunities for future generations.

Lomelí Vanegas noted that the institution's strength lies in its ability to process diverse perspectives through shared norms and objectives. The ceremony was attended by UNAM General Secretary Javier de la Fuente Hernández and Rosaura Ruiz Gutiérrez, representing the Mexican federal government.
