UNAM conducts in-person control exams following admission irregularities
The Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) has launched a series of in-person control exams across various locations, including Tijuana, León, Oaxaca, and Mexico City, to verify the integrity of its undergraduate admission process. This extraordinary measure follows the detection of statistical anomalies, cases of impersonation, and the unauthorized use of artificial intelligence during the university’s first attempt at a fully online admission exam.
In Mexico City, the exams are being held at the Palacio de los Deportes over three days, with approximately 40,000 to 53,000 applicants expected to participate. While the university has implemented strict security measures—including in-person supervision, the use of tablets without internet connections, and rigorous physical searches—some applicants have reported technical difficulties. Specifically, students in the first shift in Mexico City reported system errors and delays that consumed valuable testing time.
UNAM Secretary General Javier de la Fuente issued a public apology to students, acknowledging the stress and uncertainty caused by the irregularities and the need for a repeat evaluation. As part of its response to the initial failures, the university has terminated its contract with the technology provider Territorium Life and established a technical commission of 16 specialists to conduct a comprehensive audit of the admission process.
