UNAM expands cultural presence through new campus and landmark art sites

The Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) is expanding its institutional and cultural footprint through significant heritage and environmental projects. The university has formally launched the UNAM Centro Histórico Campus, a project integrating over 15 historic buildings in Mexico City. This initiative, which includes the Palace of the School of Medicine and the Academy of San Carlos, aims to create a cultural and educational corridor to democratize knowledge and increase accessibility for local communities and visitors.

Additionally, the university’s Espacio Escultórico remains a landmark of environmental art within the Pedregal de San Ángel. Created in 1979 during the development of the University Cultural Center, the monumental concrete circle was designed to respect and integrate the volcanic landscape formed by the Xitle eruption, rather than destroying the terrain. The site serves as a connection between modern art, ecology, and Mesoamerican ancestral memory.
