UNAM suspends classes on June 11 for World Cup 2026 opening

The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) announced that all academic and administrative activities will be suspended on Thursday, 11 June 2026. The decision responds to expected traffic disruptions from the inauguration ceremony and opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 at the Estadio Ciudad de México. In its communiqué UNAM stated, "Como es de conocimiento público, el próximo jueves 11 de junio se realizará la Ceremonia de Inauguración de la Copa Mundial de la FIFA 2026, así como el juego inaugural en el Estadio Ciudad de México," and emphasized that the suspension is exceptional, without precedent, and justified by the completion of school cycles and reduced student presence.

The State of Mexico (Edomex) also suspended classes for the same day, affecting about 4 million students across basic, secondary and higher education, citing similar mobility concerns. Other states such as Veracruz and Jalisco joined the pause. Government authorities encouraged remote work for public‑sector employees on 11 June to further alleviate traffic congestion.
