UNAM holds in-person control exams following suspected AI admission fraud
The Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) is conducting a mandatory in-person 'control exam' for approximately 58,783 applicants following the detection of statistical anomalies and potential artificial intelligence fraud during its first fully online admission process. The re-evaluation is scheduled to take place between August 12 and August 19, 2026.
To facilitate the process, UNAM has designated four regional testing sites: Mexico City, León, Oaxaca, and Tijuana. While the university stated these locations aim to reduce travel times, many students have protested the decision, citing significant logistical burdens and unexpected travel costs for those assigned to cities far from their homes. Some applicants have even threatened collective legal action (amparos) to protect their original selection status.
As of August 9, over 43,000 applicants—roughly 74% of those called—have successfully secured appointments through the 'TU SITIO' platform. However, many students continue to report technical failures on the website, claiming they are unable to schedule appointments despite meeting the required score thresholds. Additionally, the INE has clarified that its existing contract with Territorium Life, a company scrutinized during the UNAM controversy, is strictly for its own internal training platform and is unrelated to the university's admission services.
