UNAM begins 2026-2027 academic cycle with 85,000 new students
The Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) has officially begun the 2026-2027 academic cycle, welcoming over 85,000 new students to its high school and undergraduate programs. Rector Leonardo Lomelí Vanegas emphasized the institution's commitment to transparency and excellence following a controversial admission process.
The admission cycle was marked by irregularities in the initial online examinations, including suspected use of artificial intelligence. In response, the university implemented a mandatory in-person control exam. Data indicates that while the in-person filter successfully blocked many suspicious cases, approximately 30 percent of applicants previously flagged as “atypical” due to score discrepancies between the online and in-person tests still secured admission.
To accommodate those not selected for their first choice, UNAM is offering 2,024 additional spots across 66 undergraduate programs. Eligible applicants, including 16,543 who took the control exam but were not admitted to their preferred option, can register via the “Tu Segunda Opción” portal from August 31 to September 4. Selection will be based on scores achieved during the in-person control exam.
