UNAM rector suspends online admission exams due to irregularities

Leonardo Lomelí Vanegas, rector of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), stated that online admission exams will not return for at least two to three years. This decision follows irregularities discovered during the recent virtual undergraduate admission process.

Lomelí Vanegas emphasized the need for mechanisms that ensure a “level playing field” for all applicants, noting that current digital methods may create advantages or disadvantages for certain sectors. He described the situation as a “wake-up call” for educational institutions to reflect on the values they transmit to students.

The university is currently undergoing an investigation by the Superior Audit of the Federation (ASF) regarding the results and application process of the virtual exam. The rector also indicated he would meet with the University's Board of Trustees to review the progress of an internal audit.
