UNAM to hold in-person control exams for 58,000 applicants following admission irregularities
The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) has scheduled an in-person "Examen de Control" for approximately 58,783 applicants between August 12 and 19, 2026. This measure follows the detection of major irregularities, including suspected widespread use of artificial intelligence, identity theft, and the sale of exam materials during the initial online admission process held in May and June.
The in-person exams will be conducted across four locations: Mexico City (53,568 applicants at the Palacio de los Deportes), León (2,777), Oaxaca (1,920), and Tijuana (518). Applicants can check their specific dates, times, and assigned venues through the university's "TU SITIO" portal.
The decision has faced legal and social challenges. Federal courts in Mexico City recently dismissed several amparos (legal injunctions) filed by students, ruling that UNAM's autonomous status allows it to determine its own selection processes and that the new exam does not constitute an unchallengeable act of authority. Meanwhile, controversy has emerged regarding Territorium Life, the company responsible for the initial online platform, which also holds a contract with Mexico's National Electoral Institute (INE). Additionally, reports have surfaced of scammers on social media offering guaranteed admission in exchange for money or sexual favors.
