UNAM seeks to expand academic cooperation and mobility with China

The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the Chinese government are seeking to expand joint research and academic-student exchange programs. During a recent visit to UNAM, China's Minister of Science and Technology, Yin Hejun, met with Rector Leonardo Lomelí to discuss strengthening research projects and increasing mobility opportunities for students and researchers.

Minister Hejun emphasized the priority of supporting young talent and expanding institutional connections. Cooperation mechanisms will be reviewed through the Science and Technology Subcommittee of the Permanent Binational Commission and promoted via the China-CELAC Forum. Rector Lomelí expressed interest in increasing cooperation across all fields, specifically highlighting physical-mathematical sciences, engineering, biological, chemical, and health sciences, as well as social sciences and humanities.

UNAM currently maintains 25 active agreements with 14 Chinese higher education institutions. The university views cooperation with Asia as strategic due to its scientific and technological significance. It was noted that China allocates approximately 3 percent of its GDP to new technology and innovation development.
