UNAM to be honored in Mexican Chamber of Deputies for 475th anniversary

The Mexican Chamber of Deputies has unanimously approved a decree to inscribe the legend “475 Years of the University of Mexico 1551-2026” in gold letters on the Wall of Honor in its session hall. The decision, which received 397 votes in favor with no opposition or abstentions, honors the historical, cultural, and educational contributions of the institution to the nation.

The initiative, proposed by Morena parliamentary group coordinator Ricardo Monreal Ávila, distinguishes this commemoration from a 2003 recognition of the university's name. This new inscription is intended as an exceptional historical commemoration of the university's nearly five centuries of tradition, which predates the formation of the Mexican state.

During the debate, legislators from various parties discussed the university's social importance and autonomy. While some members of the PAN party highlighted the historical links between the university and their party's founder, Manuel Gómez Morín, other deputies emphasized that the university's autonomy was a hard-won achievement by students and teachers through historical struggles.
