UNAM returns to in-person admission exams after online testing failures

The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) has announced a return to in-person admission exams for high school and undergraduate programs following significant irregularities during its remote testing process. Rector Leonardo Lomelí Vanegas acknowledged failures in planning, coordination, and supervision during the online selection process for the 2026-2027/1 cycle.

A technical commission report identified several critical issues, including the use of artificial intelligence by applicants, third-party participation, and inadequate physical environment controls. The report noted atypical score distributions, such as a sharp increase in perfect scores in certain programs. These operational gaps were exacerbated by a delayed contract with the platform provider, Territorium Life.

To restore transparency and reliability, future exams will be conducted in person using pre-loaded electronic devices at various locations across Mexico and abroad. Additionally, UNAM is reviewing its administrative structures and considering curricular reforms to reorient low-demand degree programs.

In related developments, the university has concluded its 'Tu Segunda Opción' process, assigning 1,743 students to 73 undergraduate programs. This brings the total number of new undergraduate students for the upcoming cycle to 50,817.
