Understanding sleep debt and its health impacts

Sleep debt refers to the accumulation of insufficient sleep when an individual consistently fails to get the amount of rest their body requires. For example, if a person needs eight hours of sleep but only gets six, they accrue a two-hour debt.

While many attempt to compensate for this by sleeping longer on weekends, the effectiveness of this method is complex. Sleep needs vary by age; adults generally require at least seven hours of regular sleep per night, while the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that teenagers aged 13 to 18 need between eight and 10 hours every 24 hours.

Chronic sleep deprivation can lead to consequences beyond simple drowsiness, including impaired concentration, mood swings, diminished decision-making abilities, memory issues, and reduced daily performance. Persistent sleep debt is also linked to various long-term health problems.
