Understanding the nutritional and chemical properties of sugar

Dietary sugar and its chemical composition involve distinct nutritional and scientific classifications. From a nutritional perspective, natural sugars found in whole foods like fruits and vegetables are accompanied by fiber, vitamins, and minerals. This packaging slows sugar absorption into the bloodstream, helping to regulate blood sugar levels and promote satiety.

Nutrition labels distinguish between total sugars and added sugars. For instance, milk contains natural lactose but zero added sugars, whereas flavored chocolate milk contains both natural and added sweeteners.

Chemically, sugar is classified as a compound rather than a mixture. As a compound, it consists of elements chemically bonded together in a fixed ratio, resulting in properties that differ from its individual constituent elements.
