UNESCO Designates Brazil’s Amazon Theaters as World Heritage Sites

On 27 March 2024, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee meeting in Busan, South Korea, inscribed two 19th‑century opera houses in the Brazilian Amazon – the Teatro Amazonas in Manaus and the Theatro da Paz in Belém – under the collective title “Teatros da Amazônia”. Both buildings, erected during the rubber‑boom era (1878 and 1896) and previously protected by Brazil’s Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (Iphan), were recognized for their architectural splendor and cultural significance.

The designation is the first time a cultural property from Brazil’s Amazon region appears on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, raising Brazil’s total of listed sites to 26 (16 cultural, nine natural, one mixed). Brazilian officials emphasized that the theaters illustrate the rich cultural diversity and historical legacy of the Amazon.
