UNESCO postpones Calakmul heritage evaluation due to missing Tren Maya report

The UNESCO World Heritage Committee delayed the impact assessment of the Tren Maya on the Calakmul archaeological zone and protected tropical forests to 2027 because Mexico failed to submit a complete conservation‑status report on time. The postponement was decided at the 48th session in Busan and the evaluation will be reconsidered at the 49th session in Kazan, keeping the site off the endangered list for now. Mexico expressed disagreement, noting that the decision was made without the conclusions of the September 2025 joint monitoring mission.

UNESCO officials warned that the Tramo 7 segment of the Tren Maya, the visitor centre and the Hotel Mundo Maya have been operating since December 2024 without an integrated evaluation of the site’s Outstanding Universal Value (VUE) or a strategic environmental assessment. The committee said the lack of comprehensive pre‑construction information “continues to hinder confirmation that impacts are fully identified and that mitigation measures are sufficient.”
