Overview

In July 2026 the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, meeting in Busan, delayed the impact assessment of Mexico’s Calakmul archaeological zone and surrounding tropical forest until its next session in 2027. The postponement stemmed from Mexico’s failure to provide a complete conservation‑status report and a strategic environmental assessment for the Tren Maya’s Tramo 7 segment, which has been operating since December 2024.

During the same meeting the Committee added six cultural sites to both the World Heritage List and the List of World Heritage in Danger, while reiterating the deferment of Calakmul’s evaluation. Mexico’s heritage agencies contested the delay, arguing that multiple reports had been submitted but that UNESCO’s required comprehensive assessment remained outstanding. The Calakmul site therefore remains off the danger list pending the 2027 review.
