UNESCO honors Rio's Flautistas da Marambaia youth music‑environment program

The Flautistas da Marambaia project in Rio de Janeiro's West Zone has received UNESCO recognition as part of the Decade of the Ocean initiative. Organized by the Instituto Timbre in partnership with the Marine Geography and Integrated Coastal Management Laboratory of UFRJ, the program offers music, dance and environmental education to children and teens, primarily in the Barra de Guaratiba neighbourhood and surrounding communities. Classes are held at the Burle Marx site, a UNESCO World Heritage area, and aim to connect participants with local mangrove ecosystems.

Since its launch in 2002, the initiative has served more than 1,200 young people; about 50 students are currently enrolled. Activities include singing, flute playing, theatrical expression and practical lessons on biodiversity, water resources and sustainable living, aligning the effort with several UN Sustainable Development Goals. Project leader Luiza Sales emphasized that the arts provide a unique pathway for youth to understand and protect their environment.
