UNESCO World Heritage Committee convenes in Busan to tackle endangered sites

The UNESCO World Heritage Committee held its 48th session in Busan, South Korea from 19‑29 July 2026. Delegates reviewed the condition of 147 listed sites and discussed possible inclusion, retention or removal of sites on the endangered list.

The agenda emphasized threats from armed conflict, unchecked construction, pollution and climate change. Specific cases highlighted included Russia’s Lake Baikal, cited for water‑quality risks, and Lebanon’s International Fairground in Tripoli, both under review for endangered status.

A coalition of Austrian heritage organisations submitted an open letter to their foreign ministry urging that Vienna’s historic centre not be removed from UNESCO’s “red list” without proper project approval, criticizing perceived government interference. The meeting illustrates growing coordination between UNESCO and bodies such as IUCN to protect vulnerable cultural and natural heritage worldwide.
