Busan UNESCO session and heritage nominations

Overview

On 19 July the 48th UNESCO World Heritage Committee opened its ten‑day session in Busan, South Korea, with about 3,000 delegates from all 196 member states, NGOs and international bodies. Chairperson Lee Byong‑hyun introduced the “Busan Declaration,” adding “collaboration” as a sixth strategic objective to UNESCO’s existing five Cs and calling for joint action on armed conflict, climate change, development pressure and digital‑era responsibility in heritage management.

The meeting ran alongside a programme of cultural events: a welcome dinner featuring performances of “Arirang” and world‑music acts, a symposium on the Japanese‑military “comfort‑women” issue, a night‑time heritage walk highlighting Busan’s wartime refugee history, a reenactment of a 5th‑century Silla princess burial in Gyeongju, an international conference on Baekje wooden tablets and bamboo wind instruments, and a national exhibition of Korea’s UNESCO Memory‑of‑the‑World documentary heritage.

Among the roughly thirty nominations reviewed, Spain’s Ribeira Sacra – a river‑canyon landscape in Galicia – faced a negative ICOMOS recommendation over concerns about dam and industrial impacts. The Xunta de Galicia and the Spanish government continue lobbying committee members, with the final vote expected between 24 and 27 May.
