UNHCR and WFP implement targeted aid for refugees in Abéché

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the World Food Programme (WFP) held a workshop in Abéché on September 17, 2026, to implement a vulnerability-based assistance model for refugees.

Due to a significant reduction in international funding and a continuous influx of displaced populations, humanitarian agencies can no longer provide generalized aid to all refugees. Officials, including WFP Deputy Country Director for Operations Alexandre Le Cuziat and UNHCR representative Jens Hesemann, emphasized that resources must now be targeted specifically toward the most precarious individuals to ensure aid reaches those in greatest need.

The workshop, launched by Djingar Gaspard, Secretary General of Ouaddaï Province, focused on validating data to better direct humanitarian support. Local authorities expressed their commitment to collaborating with international organizations and community leaders to maximize the efficiency of these targeted aid efforts.
