Unicamp researchers develop liquid bandage to accelerate wound healing

Researchers at the University of Campinas (Unicamp), in partnership with the academic spin-off Dermbio Biotech, have developed a liquid bandage technology that can reduce wound healing time by up to 50%.

Applied directly to a lesion, the biocompatible polymer solution forms a transparent, waterproof film within 45 seconds. This film acts as a three-dimensional structure that supports cell regeneration while providing a barrier against external agents that cause infection. Because the material is waterproof, it does not need to be removed during bathing, and its transparency allows for wound monitoring without disturbing the protection.

The technology is particularly effective for injuries on joints, such as elbows and knees, as the film moves with the skin and eliminates the need for traditional gauze or bandages that can be uncomfortable or require frequent adjustment. Additionally, the polymer is designed to be metabolized by the body, meaning it does not require manual removal after application. The production process utilizes non-toxic, renewable solvents.
