A new report from UNICEF reveals that approximately 20 million children aged 12 to 17 across 21 countries experienced technology-facilitated sexual exploitation or abuse in a single year. The study, titled ‘Through Children’s Eyes: How Digital Technologies Enable Child Sexual Abuse’, indicates that nearly one in five internet-using children surveyed encountered such abuse.

Key findings include that over 15 million children were exposed to unwanted sexual content, 9 million were coerced into sexual conversations or sharing images, and 4 million had their sexual images distributed without consent. Social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, and WhatsApp, accounted for nearly 60 percent of reported incidents, while online gaming represented 14 percent.

Crucially, the report challenges the notion that perpetrators are primarily strangers; in 57 percent of cases, the victim already knew the perpetrator, such as a peer, friend, or family member. UNICEF warned of severe emotional and psychological consequences, noting that victims are four times more likely to report suicidal thoughts or self-harm. Despite the scale of the issue, less than 1 percent of abusive incidents were reported to authorities.
