Titled ‘Pelos Olhos das Crianças: Como as Tecnologias Digitais Facilitam o Abuso Sexual Infantil’, the study—based on surveys of 21,000 children across 21 countries—revealed that approximately 20 million children aged 12 to 17 experienced technology-facilitated sexual exploitation or abuse within a single year. Findings indicate that 15 million children were exposed to unwanted sexual content, 9 million were pressured into sexual conversations or sharing images, and 4 million had sexual images distributed without consent. Social media platforms accounted for nearly 60 percent of incidents, while 14 percent occurred in online games. Notably, 57 percent of cases involved perpetrators known to the victims, such as friends, peers, or family members. The report emphasized that victims are four times more likely to report suicidal thoughts or self-harm, yet less than 1 percent of incidents are reported to authorities. UNICEF is calling for stronger safety designs and updated regulations to address emerging risks like AI-facilitated abuse.
