Israeli airstrike kills Al Jazeera journalist Ahmed Wishah in Gaza

An Israeli airstrike on a house in the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza on 20 June 2026 killed Al Jazeera Mubasher cameraman Ahmed Wishah and three other Palestinians. Israel’s defence forces said the strike targeted a Hamas sniper operative, describing Wishah as a “terrorist” linked to the militant group, but provided no evidence. Al Jazeera condemned the attack as a “heinous crime” and an unlawful targeting of journalists, noting that Wishah’s death is the 12th Al Jazeera journalist killed since the Gaza war began in October 2023.

The strike occurred despite the cease‑fire that took effect in October 2025. Palestinian health officials reported four deaths and numerous injuries in the attack, adding that the overall death toll since the cease‑fire began exceeds 1,000 Palestinians, with more than 173 000 wounded. Earlier, Ahmed’s brother Mohammed Wishah, also an Al Jazeera journalist, was killed in an Israeli strike in April 2026.
