Somalia faces child malnutrition crisis as humanitarian aid is cut
UNICEF has issued a warning regarding the humanitarian crisis in Somalia, stating that unprecedented cuts to aid are threatening the lives of millions. Approximately 1.2 million children are expected to suffer from malnutrition this year, including 500,000 children suffering from severe acute malnutrition.
According to UNICEF spokesperson James Elder, these funding reductions have already forced the closure of 205 health and nutrition facilities. This has led to a 32% increase in children admitted to stabilization centers for severe acute malnutrition during the first half of the year compared to the same period last year. The reduction in preventative services is driving more children into critical condition.
The crisis is being compounded by environmental and economic factors, including severe drought in northern Somalia and the threat of heavy flooding caused by the El Niño phenomenon. Additionally, rising costs for fuel and fertilizer, linked to conflicts in the Middle East, are placing further strain on the region's ability to provide essential services like education, water, and protection.
