Yemen faces return to full-scale war and humanitarian crisis

The United Nations has warned that Yemen is sliding back into full-scale war following the collapse of recent truces and an escalation in fighting between Houthi forces and the internationally recognized government. UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg stated that the renewed violence threatens regional security and international commerce.

The humanitarian situation has reached critical levels. Since early August, at least 46 civilians have been killed and over 130 injured. Military escalation has displaced more than 200,000 people across multiple governorates, marking the highest displacement since the 2022 truce. Approximately 4,000 people have fled across the Bab al-Mandab Strait to Djibouti and Somalia.

Health and nutrition crises are intensifying. UNICEF reports that over one-third of screened children suffer from acute malnutrition. Public health is under severe strain, with cholera cases tripling in a three-week period alongside rising incidences of dengue fever and malaria.

The conflict has also spilled across borders; a ballistic missile strike on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, killed 12 people and injured over 300, prompting further condemnation from UN officials regarding threats to civilian infrastructure.
