UNIFIL Commander warns of security vacuum in Lebanon

UNIFIL Commander General Dioudato Ibnara has issued a warning regarding the potential for a security vacuum in southern Lebanon following the conclusion of the mission's current mandate. Speaking at an event in Tyre, Ibnara emphasized the urgent need for serious cooperation between the United Nations, Lebanese authorities, and the international community to maintain stability.

With approximately three months remaining in the current mandate, the UN official stressed that preparations for the next phase must begin immediately. The primary concern cited is not the end of the mission itself, but the current lack of a viable alternative capable of fulfilling the security, humanitarian, and field roles currently held by the international forces. Ibnara called for unity and proactive efforts to ensure that any transition or alternative formula can effectively support the Lebanese Army and prevent instability.
