UNIFIL Mission in Lebanon Faces Uncertain Future as Italian Brigade Takes Over West Sector

The United Nations Security Council has confirmed that the UNIFIL peacekeeping mandate will expire on 31 December. With the deadline approaching, the future of security arrangements in southern Lebanon remains unclear. The United Nations and the European Union are examining several options, including a reduced troop presence and a civilian‑led mission focused on training and strengthening Lebanese forces. Proposals have mentioned a short‑term French leadership followed by possible Italian involvement, while Arab and Israeli concerns add complexity to any new arrangement.

On 5 August, Italy’s Pozzuolo del Friuli Brigade assumed command of UNIFIL’s West sector, succeeding the Sassari Brigade. The hand‑over ceremony was attended by UNIFIL commander General Diodato Abagnara, the Italian ambassador to Lebanon, and senior Italian military officials. The brigade continues patrols, coordinates with the Lebanese Armed Forces, supports civil‑military projects, assists vulnerable populations, and carries out de‑mining and infrastructure repairs to aid local communities in southern Lebanon.
