UNIFIL presence remains critical in southern Lebanon amid ongoing conflict
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) maintains that its presence in southern Lebanon remains vital for stability. UNIFIL spokesperson Kandice Ardiel stated that peacekeepers continue to support the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and work to strengthen the Lebanese army's authority in the region.
Human Rights Watch has urged the UN Security Council to extend UNIFIL’s mandate beyond December 31, 2026. The organization warns that a withdrawal could create a security vacuum, leaving millions of Lebanese civilians vulnerable to human rights abuses and forced displacement amid ongoing hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah.
Recent military escalations have seen the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) conduct strikes in southern Lebanon, including an operation in Ansar that killed Ali Samir Al-Haj Hassan, a commander in Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Force. The IDF reported that the strike was a response to a Hezbollah attack that seriously injured three Israeli soldiers. Meanwhile, Lebanon’s Ministry of Health reports significant casualties resulting from the ongoing conflict.
