UNIFIL reports surge in Israeli strikes and airspace violations in southern Lebanon
UNIFIL has reported a significant escalation of Israeli military activity in southern Lebanon. Between August 7 and August 9, the peacekeeping mission recorded 455 projectiles fired into southern Lebanon and 97 airspace violations, primarily by drones. On Saturday alone, 229 projectiles were recorded, marking the highest single-day total since late June.
In addition to aerial and artillery strikes, UNIFIL reported that two Israeli Merkava tanks fired rounds that landed approximately 200 meters from a UN position. The mission also noted the discovery of unguarded weapons, unexploded ordnances, and improvised explosive devices in its area of operations.
Amidst these hostilities, diplomatic efforts continue regarding a U.S.-mediated framework to end the conflict. A proposed mechanism involves potential foreign troop contributors, including the UK, Italy, Switzerland, and Indonesia, to verify the disarmament of Hezbollah in exchange for a phased Israeli withdrawal.
Separately, the Lebanese Parliament has made history by abolishing the death penalty, becoming the first country in the Middle East to do so. Meanwhile, Iran has condemned the strikes, accusing the United States of being an accomplice to Israel due to its ongoing support.
