Entre Ríos moves to abolish lifetime pensions for governors

The Legislature of Entre Ríos is moving to repeal Law 4.506, a special regime in place since 1965 that provides lifetime pensions to the province's governor and vice-governor. The proposed reform, initiated by Governor Rogelio Frigerio in January 2024, aims to eliminate political privileges and promote transparency and public ethics. If passed, the pension would have provided beneficiaries with an income equivalent to 75 percent of their former salary.

This legislative change will directly affect the current administration, as Governor Frigerio and Vice-Governor Alicia Aluani will be the first officials to lose access to this benefit upon the conclusion of their mandates. The provincial government argues that the historical justifications for the regime are outdated and conflict with modern principles of equality.

Separately, the provincial congress of the Unión Cívica Radical (UCR) in Entre Ríos has adjusted its internal calendar to ensure party elections occur in non-electoral years. The party also addressed administrative matters in Villaguay, though broader political discussions regarding alliances and electoral schedules remain postponed due to uncertainty regarding the national electoral timeline.
