Assam floods trigger relief aid, DBT delays and school reopening

More than 18,000 families affected by the recent floods in Assam have not received the first instalment of the state’s Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) assistance because of errors in bank account details, according to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He said district officials are correcting the data and that cheques or bank drafts will be issued where transfers fail.

Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda visited the flood‑ravaged Sivasagar and Charaideo districts, travelling by tractor to reach marooned villages such as Bihubor and Nepali Khuti. He assured residents that the central government will provide full financial assistance and that teams are assessing damage for rehabilitation.

Gauhati University launched a conservation drive to restore centuries‑old manuscripts damaged by floodwaters, including a 300‑year‑old Ramayana and a 263‑year‑old Kirtan text. The university’s experts are cleaning and chemically treating the pages to prevent further fungal damage.

Education Minister Ranoj Pegu announced that schools in the affected districts will resume regular classes from 10 August, with alternative arrangements such as classes in relief camps for schools still unusable. The state government is also working on relocation and reconstruction support for families whose homes were destroyed.
