India northeastern flood response
Overview
In late July 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met MPs from Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland and pledged full central assistance for the severe flooding that had affected more than 300,000 people in the region. The Indian Air Force began large‑scale rescue operations.
On 4 August, Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda visited Assam’s flood‑hit Sivasagar district with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, inspected damage in marooned villages, met displaced families, and reaffirmed that the central government would provide “no shortage” of financial assistance.
Later that day Nadda also travelled to nearby Charaideo, using a tractor to reach isolated hamlets such as Bihubor and Nepali Khuti. The state government reported that more than 18,000 families had not received the first instalment of Direct Benefit Transfer assistance because of bank‑account errors; officials are correcting the data and will issue cheques or drafts where transfers fail.
Gauhati University launched a conservation drive to restore centuries‑old manuscripts damaged by floodwaters, including a 300‑year‑old Ramayana and a 263‑year‑old Kirtan text.
Education Minister Ranoj Pegu announced that schools in the affected districts would resume regular classes from 10 August, with temporary arrangements in relief camps for schools still unusable. The state is also working on relocation and reconstruction support for families whose homes were destroyed.
