Unions demand systemic reforms to combat violence against women
Labor unions and political figures are calling for urgent systemic reforms to combat violence against women and address social inequality.
The Equality, Rights and Justice Union (HAKSEN) has demanded the establishment of women's shelters in every district and the creation of a 24/7 violence support hotline. HAKSEN official Serap Kedi noted that two women were killed in the past week, arguing that punishing perpetrators is insufficient if the state fails in its fundamental duty to protect citizens before violence escalates.
Similarly, the Basın-Sen union emphasized that the state must protect women before they are murdered. The union criticized the tendency to treat violence as a private family matter and called for increased economic independence for women through secure employment and social safety nets. Basın-Sen also urged media professionals to avoid sensationalist reporting that victim-blames or centers perpetrators.
