Regional movement against violence against women

Overview

Labor unions and activists across several regions are calling for systemic reforms to combat violence against women and address social inequality.

In Cyprus, the Equality, Rights and Justice Union (HAKSEN) has demanded the establishment of women’s shelters in every district and a 24/7 support hotline. Following recent killings, HAKSEN official Serap Kedi argued that the state must fulfill its duty to protect citizens before violence escalates. The Basın-Sen union also called for increased economic independence for women and urged media professionals to avoid sensationalist reporting.

In Croatia, Montenegro, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, the crisis remains critical. Croatian activists and the SDP Women’s Forum are advocating for a dedicated law against gender-based violence and standardized risk assessments to prevent femicide. In Montenegro, research indicates that one in five women has experienced violence, with many not seeking help. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, experts have noted that peer violence among youth can escalate from unaddressed conflicts. Across these areas, there is a unified demand for improved coordination between police, judicial, and social services.
